Nova Scotians are a pretty casual bunch, so when you’re selecting clothes to take on your trip you don’t have to pack your fanciest frocks.
During the cooler months, jeans, leggings or yoga pants, with a comfy pair of Uggs or boots are standard apparel for females ages five to 75. In the heat of the summer, it’s shorts, or capris, and your favourite flip flops.

When it comes to male fashion one thing in particular seems to stand out – plaid! In the winter it’s long-sleeve flannel shirts and in the summer they are short-sleeve and cotton.
There are a few occasions where you may want to dress a little fancier, like if you’re sitting down for a nice meal or heading out for a night on the town.
The 20-somethings tend to don a pair of heels and a short dress when hitting the bar on a Saturday night.
The 30 and 40-somethings, like my friends and I, are a bit more casual. We can usually be seen in a pair of ballet flats, our cutest pair of jeans, and a nice top.

Nova Scotia is known for its mix-bag of weather, which makes it the most important thing to take into consideration when selecting your travel wardrobe. It’s not uncommon to wake up to pouring rain and, just a few hours later, it’s a beautiful sunny day – or, vice versa. Your best strategy is to bring layers and include a rain coat! Even if you’re planning to travel during the summer months, it is always a good idea to pack a warm sweater. It can get pretty cool in the evening, especially if you’re by the water.

The other thing you need to consider is that our city is built on a hill. That means that exploring the downtown core by foot is best done in a comfortable pair of sneakers.
Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit if you’ll be visiting in July or August. Nova Scotia is surrounded by water and we have beautiful beaches. The ocean can be a little chilly, so if you’re used to warmer water, you may want to visit one of our many lakes instead.
