The Purple People Feeder is all about waffle fusion. They have savoury waffles like the grilled cheese waffle, the waffle burger, chicken and waffles, and the donair waffle. They also have a variety of sweet waffles, like waffle cone ice creams, bubble waffle treats, and Belgian waffles.
If you’re a fan of the grilled cheese than this food truck is for you! Their grilled cheese sandwiches feature locally sourced cheese (The Dutchman’s Cheese Farm), meat (Sweet William’s) and bread (Julien’s Bakery). They also offer locally made potato chips (Covered Bridge) and root beer (Propeller). My favourite is the Classic Press, which is a mixture of three cheeses on sourdough bread. However, for those of you who prefer a meatier sandwich, there are options that include smoked ham, roasted chicken, and meatloaf.
The Gecko Bus call themselves “Canada’s Freakiest Food Truck.” Whether or not that’s true, I’m not sure, but the do make tasty tacos, burritos, and burrito bowls. They have a small, simple menu, but the quality of their food makes up for the lack of variety.
Bud the Spud is one of the city’s original food trucks. The chip wagon has been selling food on the streets of Halifax since 1977 and, as a child, getting some of Bud’s fries was my favourite part of a trip into the city. On the menu you’ll find hand-cut fries made from P.E.I. potatoes, plus hand-breaded fish, poutine, sausages, and hot dogs.
The Nomad Gourmet prides theirselves on offering “gourmet food to hungry Haligonians on the go.” This food truck has a focus on fresh and local, using environmentally friendly packaging and purchasing their ingredients from local farms and markets. You’ll find items like burgers, sandwiches, burritos, and tacos on their menu.
Ol’School Donuts is literally an old school bus where you can buy warm, old-fashioned donuts. You’ll find classic flavours like plain and sugar on the menu, alongside not so traditional flavours like strawberry shortcake, peanut butter cup, and maple bacon.
